Clothes and Travel

So as I started to browse my Facebook and Instagram photos, I noticed a couple common themes.  One theme was clothes.  It seems like whenever I am going to an event where I need to be dressed very well, I tend to get a picture with a friend or a group and post it.  This got me thinking, “Do I have a common ‘style’ of nice clothes”.  I started looking through all of these types of pictures and noticed that I actually do have several trends.  Its always a suit with some type of small pattern, never solid.  Nearly always a white shirt, and never a solid tie.  This made me wonder how companies could advertise towards me.  Then I realized, they already do.  It seems like every time I log onto Facebook, there is an ad about The Tie Bar, a website with $20 ties.  I’ve never actually bought anything from them, but I would be lying if I hadn’t found many things I like on their site.

Now another pattern I’ve noticed is travel.  Anytime my friends and I pack up and go somewhere for an adventure, there’s usually always some new pictures taken.  This struck me as pretty cool because even though I never go through a certain website to plan my travel, I always get ads from EFcollegebreak.com about there GTFO (Go Far and Travel Often) deals.  I was curious if me tagging different locations around the United States has triggered me as a possible customer.  If so, that’s actually really impressive.

Anyways, there’s just two common things I’ve noticed throughout my social media pictures.  I am sure there’s more, but I don’t really feel like they are substantial enough to write about.

I too have been targeted a lot for clothes, not just with facebook, but essentially through every other platform as well. I’ve asks myself similar questions to what you posted. I’ve wondered if I’m visually communicating things, or if it’s just my general demographic or lexical information that is triggering everything. Either way, it’s crazy to think about, and really impressive, like you said. I’d be interested to see how this visual data is coded and compiled, and if it shares any similarities to travel locations, etc. as your post mentions.

  • I also have been targeted by several travel agencies because I have a lot of pictures from my trips on Facebook. I also have been researching study abroad options and spring break destinations, so I get a lot of ads from travel agencies, like EFcollegebreak.com.

I think you’re right. I think that the clothes and the traveling has definitely made you a target for some ads. You might get put into the “professional young men” demographic because of the suits you wear, or maybe the “Adventurous traveler” because of your tagged locations. I wonder if there will ever be an ad that targets you for both of those!

    Beautiful photo by the way!
