Necklaces & Nature….

So, I went through a solid amount of my Facebook photos, and I realized something fairly obvious: I love long necklaces that have some type of tassel or pendant. I also like taking pictures of bodies of water that I visit, like lakes and stuff.

It would not be hard to figure out that I have a certain clothing style, and an advertisement company could definitely target me based on my relatively bohemian style. Hit me with a dangle-y piece of jewelry or kimono, and I am probably yours. (I’ve been called out for my love of long necklaces and kimonos before, actually, so retailers could have a field day with me.) If a company wanted to really sucker me in then they would also probably have stalked me enough to realize I love tie-dyed and acid-washed pieces of clothing!

As far as the nature side of my personality, my Facebook pictures give off lake-girl vibes. I do love me a good, clean lake for swimming and hanging out with my friends and family. My aunt and uncle live up on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia, which is a large part of the reason I have an abundance of pictures that feature the lake or items a person tends to have or spice up his/her lake life with: jet skis, water skis, rafts, noodles, and a crazy dog jumping in the water all the time. BUT, I don’t actually care for or personally need any lake accessories myself, so a company that targeted really specific ads at me would not have much success. However, given my age and the demographic that I would fall into, I am sure that companies would be able to figure out that I do not own a house on the lake myself. It would be quick and easy for them to come at me with some type of ad that features a smaller product that I’d be able to bring with me to the lake–perhaps some type of cooler, a bathing suit, a pair of flip flops, or a float.

Finally, there are also a fair amount of pictures on my Facebook that signify my love for reading. Books, books, books! I’m sure that any company selling books or a certain genre of literature would be able to strategically bombard me with ads in this department.

Here are some pictures of me wearing long necklaces, as I annoy my family and pose with friends:

And, here are some pictures of lakes that I either took or am featured in:

I definitely love the water too! Maybe travel companies would try to target you with advertisements to fly to scenic locations featuring bodies of water. Flight to Lake Tahoe? That would be pretty enticing.

With your love of water, it would make sense that there could be ads that would make you want to visit the lake more or often or show you other places you could visits with bodies of water. I have never really seen an advertisement directed to me for books and I also like to read as can be seen in my Facebook photos. I think those ads would probably be the most successful in my case than ads for clothing or items that I really don’t need.

I love your pictures! I also love that you that you mentioned that Facebook would be able to determine your demographic enough to realize you probably don’t own a lake house. A question I have posed to a few other people on the blog is the question of ethics we brought up in class. I began to think that if ads are targeted to our interests and likes than they don’t necessarily have to be shocking for us to pay attention to them. Since your photos seem to have a definite theme that Facebook would be able to pick up on, what are your thoughts on this? Would you pay attention to a book or necklace ad even if it wasn’t “shocking?”
