Charlie’s Data Visualization Post

I looked at several of my Facebook photos for this blog post. I personally do not add very many pictures to social media, so the majority of the photos I have on my page are ones that I am tagged in (mostly by my mom). Many of my most recent pictures are from the family trip we took to London and Paris this past summer. I think just about all of the photos taken during that trip were taken on an iPhone. One of the photos I added at the bottom of this post is of my family at Windsor Castle in England. My mom included the location on the photo, so that would attract many travel agencies to target me, as they can see that I like to travel. Windsor Castle is a popular tourist destination in England, so that would communicate to advertisers that I am a tourist in another country. We also have automated tour guides around our necks in the photo, so we contributed to big data by using those to navigate around the castle. The other photo I have attached is of me and my family (minus my sister) at a Dave Matthews Band concert last May. This concert was at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre, which my mom tagged on the photo. Walnut Creek could use this photo to target me because they have evidence that I have been to concerts there. Also, ticketing companies could target me as they can see that I enjoy going to concerts. We are all wearing similar clothing in both photos, so clothing companies similar to the ones we have on in the pictures could target us with their advertisements.

  • I also took a lot of pictures with my iPhone when on my Europe trip. I didn’t really find any advertisements that pertained to my pictures directly, but on my instagram, I did often find pictures that were similar to mine or in a similar location in the explore page. Sometimes I didn’t even tag a location, but considering what was in my picture, I would say that it’s enough to generate the right types of ads, and I would believe that travel agencies would definitely be advertised depending on how often pictures from outside the country were being posted.

  • Hi!

So I also get tagged in pictures by my mother when we go places, and often the location is shared. I go to concerts with my parents every once in a while, so advertisers could see that I like the music of the Temptations, Duran Duran, and the Moody Blues, as well as Straight No Chaser. I do like those bands, but they are not the only music I listen to- they are not even the default music I listen to. I don’t really know what advertisements I am getting since I use adblock on my laptop, but presumably they could be looking at my study abroad travel to target me for travel advertising, they could look at my clothes and advertise similar brands (which I do remember getting before I used adblock).
