Lesson Plan: Algorithms and Predictive Analytics

Thomas Moran, Sarah Keener, Walker Fulk

Day One: Predictive Analytics

Goals: Enlighten the audience on predictive analytics not only from a conceptual standpoint but also using modern examples, and current events. Actively reflect on the cultural, social and ethical pros and cons of predictive analytics.

All students should have read chapter 7 in Viktor Mayer Schönberger’s Big Data book at this point.

4:45-4:50 -Money Ball Video

4:50 – 5:10 Come up with questions that should have already have been thought of, and live tweet at the author.

5:10 – 5:15 Short video on Predictive Analytics used in Politics (The Company Aristotle)

5:15- 5:30 Short lecture on data mining

5:30 – 5:40 Discussion and or possible activity on data mining

Students should complete blog post and download their data from Google

Day Two: Algorithms

Goals: Use a variation of media, activities and traditional teaching methods to educate peers on what Algorithms are, what they are used for, how Big Data is sorted by them, the benefits of them and also their unforeseen consequences.

Classmates should have read our assigned article.

4:30 – 4:40 – Introduction to algorithms. Powerpoint presentation and brief lecture to get the class started.

4:40-4:45 – discuss the blog post and their google data downloads

4:45 – 4:55 – Online Algorithmic activity, demonstrates the capacity of the human mind to create algorithms

4:55 – 5:05 – Discussion questions on the results and findings from the activity

5:05 – 510 – Short video on filter bubbles

5:10 – 5:25 – Short power point presentation and lecture on filter bubbles

5:25 – 5:45 – Review the answers to the questions on viktor mayer shonberger’s chapter & other Big Data topics
